About

I'm Eddie Bonilla, a cybersecurity leader whose career has grown from hands-on IT to leading security for a publicly traded company. Over 20 years I've worked in some of the most demanding environments in the field: the City of New York's government network infrastructure; a global online gaming company with a 100% availability requirement, defending it against botnet and DDoS attacks; and enterprise security monitoring for a large manufacturer.

At CBIZ, a large, publicly traded professional services firm, I lead security operations, engineering, and governance at director-level scope, protecting 12,000+ users across 150+ offices in the U.S. and India. I report directly to the CISO as a key strategic partner, consulted on strategy and major decisions before they're made and responsible for carrying them out, and I work closely with executive leadership, Legal, and HR. In that partnership, we've expanded the team, strengthened each core pillar of the program, and built a security program that has held up through rapid growth and 50+ acquisitions. We did it on budget, and we didn't cut corners on security to get there.

I'm a hands-on technical leader. I still get into the systems myself, engineering, tuning, and troubleshooting the security stack with my teams. I'm also known for developing people as much as programs: I own hiring, promotions, and career growth, and I build teams that run on their own. I bring a legal perspective most security leaders lack. I earned it working alongside attorneys, and I use it today: giving our legal team first-pass redlines on vendor contracts, and guiding cyber investigations on discovery, scope limits, legal holds, and chain of custody. I'm building on it as a Master of Legal Studies candidate at Wake Forest University School of Law. Outside work, I serve as Post Service Officer for my American Legion post, after four years as Adjutant of my VFW post.

Key results

  1. Faster detection & response

Built the security operations function from scratch, then set its service objectives, wrote the playbooks it runs on, and engineered detections mapped to MITRE ATT&CK across the XDR, SIEM, and network detection stack. Cut the noise so analysts see the alerts that matter, added threat hunting guided by threat intelligence, and turned every post-incident review into new detections and control changes. These changes cut mean time to detect by 52% and mean time to respond by 47%, bringing response down to within minutes of an alert across 12,000+ users in 150+ offices.

  2. Incident response effectiveness & positive attribution

GCIH-certified incident commander for significant security events, coordinating Legal, HR, IT, and executive leadership from the first alert through containment and recovery. Lead investigations through complete analysis, root-cause determination, and positive attribution, including third-party and supply chain compromises, and write the formal IR reports for executives, Legal, and regulators. I also guide the legal side of each investigation, covering discovery, limits on investigation scope, legal and regulatory requirements, legal holds, and chain of custody for evidence, so findings stand up to legal scrutiny. Layered controls, continuous monitoring, and fast containment keep events limited in scope, and every post-incident review feeds lessons learned back into detections and controls.

  3. Board reporting that won funding

Partnered with the CISO on the security reporting that goes to the Board. Defined the program's metrics, KPIs, and key risk indicators (MTTD/MTTR, incident trends, vulnerability remediation, audit findings, vendor risk scores, and phishing results), built the dashboards behind them, and used MITRE ATT&CK, MITRE ATLAS, and OWASP to connect threats to business impact. Those briefings helped secure a 45% increase in security funding and approval to expand the security team.

  4. M&A security at scale

Lead security due diligence and integration for 50+ acquired firms, guided by a repeatable M&A security playbook I wrote that cut time-to-compliance by about 40%. Each firm is assessed before close, then brought under the company's monitoring, controls, and governance after it. The most complex integrations included Marcum LLP (the largest), RAFFA, Friedman, and Skoda Minioti, each bringing 500 to 5,000 users and together spanning dozens of major datacenters and thousands of servers and websites, all integrated while keeping the business running.

  5. Largest accounting deal in 25+ years

Currently working on the security side of Grant Thornton's pending acquisition of CBIZ, the largest transaction of its kind in the accounting space in more than 25 years. I bring the same due diligence and integration discipline proven across 50+ acquisitions to a combination of far greater scale and scrutiny, protecting client data and keeping security operations steady through the transition.

  6. Data protection

Built the company's data protection program around a tiered data classification scheme, enforced through DLP and sensitivity labels across a hybrid multi-cloud environment: email, endpoints, cloud collaboration, and hosted file platforms. Extended the same controls to data that generative AI tools can reach, and fed DLP alerts straight into the SOC's automated triage workflow. That reduced unmanaged sensitive data exposure by about 55% and gave the business clear visibility into where client and company data lives and who can reach it.

  7. Security automation

Designed and built the automation behind the SOC's daily workflow: low-code and API-driven integrations across security, ITSM, and collaboration platforms that route DLP and security alerts, standardize incident intake, enrich each alert with context before an analyst picks it up, and page the on-call responder automatically. That cut analysts' manual triage work roughly in half, made after-hours escalation consistent, and shifted the team's time from sorting alerts to investigating real threats.

  8. Built a global organization

Built a new security team and matured it into a multi-team organization covering eight security disciplines, hiring for potential and developing people from within. Led the program's international expansion, including three offices in India, hiring and managing security staff outside the U.S. and bringing global security assets under the same monitoring, controls, and governance. Set training and certification standards, career paths, and knowledge transfer so no capability depends on one person. Now leading a restructure into six functions with dedicated leads, giving emerging security leaders a clear path into management.

  9. Vendor & supply chain risk management

Built the company's Vendor & Supply Chain Risk Management Program from scratch, scoring every vendor and business partner on SOC reports, vulnerability scans, security scorecard ratings, and a custom questionnaire, and declining any that fell below the acceptable threshold. What began as a program I ran myself is now a critical business function with its own dedicated team and manager.

  10. Proofs of value & contract review

Throughout my career I've run proofs of concept, now often called proofs of value, to test security products against real requirements before the company commits to buying. At CBIZ I also lead the negotiations that follow and give Legal a first-pass review and redlines on NDAs, purchase agreements, master service agreements, technical service agreements, and other contracts that need legal review. That first pass makes sure every commitment, especially service level agreements, matches what we can actually deliver, so we never overpromise, and it takes much of the heavy lifting off the legal team before they finalize the agreement.

  11. Governance & compliance

Own governance and compliance end to end. Write and maintain the enterprise security policy library; own SOC 1 and SOC 2 audits from control design and evidence collection through the auditor relationship; support HITRUST and ISO 27001 readiness; and run enterprise risk assessments aligned to NIST CSF, NIST SP 800-53, CIS Controls, and ISO 27001/27002, prioritizing remediation by business impact. Maintain compliance with SOX, PCI DSS, HIPAA, GLBA, GDPR, PIPL, and CCPA, support FISMA requirements on government work, and bring working knowledge of FedRAMP, CMMC, and NIST SP 800-171.

  12. AI governance, security & testing

Built and own the AI governance program: acceptable-use policy, AI system inventory, and a risk review every AI tool must pass, with 50+ AI tools and vendors reviewed against NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, OWASP LLM Top 10, and MITRE ATLAS. Red-team AI applications for prompt injection, data leakage, and excessive agency; monitor prompts, agentic AI activity, and the non-human identities AI uses for misuse; and extend sensitivity labels and DLP to the data AI tools can reach, so the business can adopt AI quickly and still keep control of its data.

Experience

Role descriptions focus on my responsibilities and results. They are not a description of any employer's security environment.

  1. Senior Manager, Security Operations & Engineering

June 2019 – Present · North Carolina (Remote)

CBIZ, Inc.Publicly traded professional services and CPA firm

Lead security operations, engineering, and governance for a large, publicly traded professional services firm of 12,000+ users across 150+ offices at director-level scope, reporting directly to the CISO as a key strategic partner, consulted on major security decisions before they're made, and partnering with executive leadership, Legal, and HR. Working closely with the CISO, delivered on the company's security objectives: a larger, better-resourced team, stronger core security pillars (AI and data classification, IAM, and GRC), and a sustainable security program, all on budget and held to a high standard.

Over my time here, I've built a new security team and matured it into a multi-team security organization: hiring for potential, putting in place the processes, playbooks, and metrics it runs on, and developing people into leaders who own their areas. I manage the full people side of the job, from hiring, promotions, performance reviews, and compensation to career counseling built around where each person wants to go.

I've helped the company scale securely through significant growth and a steady stream of acquisitions, integrating 50+ firms and now supporting Grant Thornton's pending acquisition of CBIZ. Along the way I've led incident response as incident commander, cut detection and response times roughly in half, and taken the program international.

    • Manage penetration testing and adversary emulation engagements and use the findings to validate detections and controls.
    • Own identity security, including MFA, conditional access, and privileged access governance.
    • Own cloud and data security across a hybrid multi-cloud environment, including cloud security posture management (CSPM) and a tiered data classification scheme enforced through DLP that reduced unmanaged sensitive data exposure by about 55%.

    AI governance, security, and testing

    • Built CBIZ's AI governance program, including the acceptable use policy, an AI system inventory, and a risk review every AI tool must pass. It's aligned to NIST AI RMF and ISO/IEC 42001.
    • Audit AI systems and vendors for data handling, access controls, logging, model provenance, and contract terms on training use of company data.
    • Test AI applications and integrations for prompt injection, jailbreaks, sensitive data leakage, insecure output handling, and excessive agency using the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications and MITRE ATLAS.
    • Monitor prompts and agentic AI activity, including AI applications, autonomous agents, and their tool calls, for prompt injection, data leakage, policy violations, and misuse.
    • Monitor non-human identities used by AI (service principals, OAuth apps, API credentials) for excessive permissions and anomalous activity.
    • Reviewed 50+ AI tools and vendors through the AI risk review process as AI capabilities spread across the vendor ecosystem.
    • Bringing AI-assisted capabilities into detection, investigation, vulnerability analysis, and threat hunting, with human review built into each workflow.
    • Extended data governance to AI so sensitivity labels and DLP policies apply to data generative AI tools can reach.

    Governance, risk & compliance

    • Write and maintain the enterprise security policy library, mapped to NIST and ISO 27001.
    • Own SOC 1 and SOC 2 audits end to end, including control design, evidence collection, gap analysis, and the auditor relationship, and support HITRUST and ISO 27001 readiness.
    • Run enterprise risk assessments and gap analyses against NIST and ISO controls, prioritizing remediation by business impact.
    • Created the Vendor & Supply Chain Risk Management Program, producing a risk score for every vendor and business partner from SOC reports, vulnerability scans, security scorecard ratings, and a custom questionnaire, and matured it into a critical business function run by a dedicated team and manager.
    • Run the security awareness program, including annual training and phishing simulations.
    • Lead security due diligence and integration for 50+ acquired firms, and wrote the M&A security playbook that cut time-to-compliance by about 40%.
    • Led security integration for the most complex mergers, including Marcum LLP (the largest), RAFFA, Friedman, and Skoda Minioti: environments of 500 to 5,000 users each, together spanning dozens of major datacenters and thousands of servers and websites, brought under central monitoring and controls.
